IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I

Position Summary

The IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I is responsible for performing entry-level field work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of traffic signal systems, ITS devices, and related field equipment. This position ensures that traffic control devices operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

To perform at this qualification level, candidates must meet the prerequisites and pass the IMSA Level 1 Traffic Signal Technician Exam, which certifies knowledge in:

• Basic terminology and operation of signalized traffic control devices and systems
• Standards and specifications for cabinet wiring and components
• Operating principles, vehicle detection, and communications systems
• Tools, materials, and processes used in signal system construction
• Fundamentals of traffic signal installation and maintenance
• Applicable legal and safety concerns

With appropriate supervision, the Level 1 technician is prepared to contribute to any traffic signal crew working on construction, maintenance, or design projects.

The Level 1 designation reflects basic technical competence under supervision, emphasizing safety, troubleshooting, and adherence to work zone standards established by the company, OSHA, IMSA, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Location: Field operations across Gades Sales Company territory: Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico

Travel may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Field Operations

• Assist in installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal controllers, pedestrian signals, andother traffic control and ITS devices
• Perform basic wiring, cabling, and connection of signal equipment
• Conduct signal timing checks and operational verification
• Inspect traffic signal poles, cabinets, controllers, detectors, and conduits for wear, damage, ormalfunction

2. Safety Compliance

• Follow all traffic control and field safety procedures while working on active roadways
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
• Maintain a clean and organized work site to prevent accidents

3. Equipment Handling

• Operate hand tools, power tools, and basic diagnostic equipment
• Assist in the operation and maintenance of signal testing equipment and vehicle-mounted tools
• Report faulty equipment to supervisory staff for repair or replacement

4. Documentation and Reporting

• Complete daily work logs, inspection reports, and service requests
• Record materials used and report discrepancies
• Communicate issues or safety hazards to supervisors promptly

5. Professional Development

• Participate in IMSA training and certification programs as required
• Maintain knowledge of MUTCD regulations, local traffic ordinances, and department procedures
• Work toward higher IMSA certification levels under guidance

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• IMSA Level 1 Traffic Signal Technician certification (or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire)
• Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
• Basic understanding of traffic signal operations, electrical circuits, and safety standards
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb ladders/poles safely

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in traffic signal installation, maintenance, or public works operations
• Knowledge of traffic signal controller software and field detection systems
• Familiarity with ITS devices, communications networks, and computers

IMSA Certification Path

• Prerequisite: 1 year of traffic signal-related experience; current IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician or IMSA-approved equivalent
• Level 1: Entry-level field technician; performs basic signal work under supervision and passes IMSA Level 1 exam
• Encouraged to advance to Level 2 and beyond with additional training and experience
