IMSA Traffic Signal Traffic Field Technician II

Position Summary

The IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II is responsible for performing advanced field work in the installation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signal systems, ITS devices, and related field equipment. This position ensures that traffic control devices operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

The IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II Exam certifies that the holder possesses formal training and hands-on experience, providing a solid foundation in traffic signal technology. The certification demonstrates extensive training in:

• Evaluating and troubleshooting traffic signal control systems
• Programming, configuring, and replacing traffic signal equipment
• Performing on-site repairs and preventive maintenance techniques
• Installing and testing vehicle and pedestrian detection systems
• Understanding signal operation phasing, timing, and coordination
• Maintaining documentation, asset management records, and service logs
• Applying traffic signal standards and MUTCD requirements

Level 2 technicians are prepared to work independently or under minimal supervision and contribute significantly to the upkeep, repair, and optimization of signalized intersections.

Location: Field operations across Gades Sales Company territory: Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico

Travel may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Advanced Field Operations

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair traffic signal controllers, cabinets, pedestrian signals, and ITS devices
• Program and replace signal equipment, including controllers, communication devices, and detection systems
• Perform signal phasing and timing adjustments, verify proper coordination, and optimize system performance
• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and tests of traffic signal systems
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical, software, and communications issues
• Evaluate and repair signal malfunctions with minimal supervision

2. Safety Compliance

• • Follow all traffic control and field safety procedures while working on active roadways
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA, IMSA, MUTCD, and company safety standards
  • Maintain safe and organized work sites and proper use of PPE

3. Equipment Handling

• Operate specialized diagnostic and testing equipment for traffic signals
• Use hand tools, power tools, and vehicle-mounted equipment safely and effectively
• Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and repair components

4. Documentation and Reporting

• Complete daily work logs, inspection reports, and service requests
• Maintain accurate records of equipment replacements, upgrades, and inspections
• Communicate technical issues, safety hazards, and recommendations to supervisory staff

5. Professional Development

• Maintain IMSA certifications and participate in ongoing training programs
• Stay current on traffic signal technologies, ITS devices, software, and regulatory updates
• Mentor and guide Level 1 technicians, assisting in training and field supervision

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• IMSA Level 1 Traffic Signal Technician certification 
• Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
• Strong understanding of traffic signal operations, electrical circuits, detection systems, and communications networks
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb ladders/poles safely

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in programming and configuring traffic signal controllers
• Knowledge of ITS devices, field communications networks, and traffic management software
• Experience mentoring or supervising Level 1 technicians
• Familiarity with preventive maintenance and asset management practices
• Certification in work zone safety, OSHA, or equivalent

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs
• Manual dexterity for tool use and equipment handling
• Visual and auditory ability to operate equipment safely

IMSA Certification Path

• Prerequisite: Current IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I; minimum two years of field experience in traffic operations
• Level 2: Advanced field technician; capable of independent troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance; passes IMSA Level 2 exam
• Encouraged to advance to Level 3 with additional training, experience, and supervisory responsibilities
